Project Overview

The brief I have selected is App Redesign and I have selected Cineworld, a movie ticket booking application for the redesign project. Cineworld is a multinational cinema chain headquartered in the United Kingdom. Steve Wiener founded it in 1995, and as of 2021, it operates over 700 screens in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Israel, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania (Cineworld, 2022). Cineworld is one of the widely used movie ticket booking application in the United Kingdom along with two other competitors, Vue and the Odeon.

Problem Identification

As an ardent movie buff and an international student in a foreign country, as soon as I arrived in the UK, I began looking for movie ticket booking applications to watch both new English-language movies and movies in my own language. Three theatre chains, Cineworld, Vue Cinemas, and Odeon, were discovered. I downloaded the app to look for movies since Cineworld was the closest theatre to my location.

As a designer, I found the application to be very challenging to navigate and use as soon as I downloaded it. Hence, I wanted to understand if other people were facing a similar issue. So, research in the form of qualitative and quantitative methods was conducted.

Existing Application

User Research

Qualitative Research

In the qualitative research, potential users of the application were selected and an initial user testing and interview of the application was done to gather more information about the problem identified.

The data gathered from the initial user testing & interview states the common problems the users are facing while using the application. The problems are noted down to be further improved in the redesign.

Quantitative Research

Based on the data gathered from the initial User Testing, a questionnaire was created to understand more about the importance of certain features like language options, the importance of the search bar, comparison between the usage of mobile applications and websites and along with that User A/B testing was conducted to identify the user preferences like Colours, Typography, Call to action shape preferences, the design of the show timings pages and seat selection page.

Outcomes of the research

The problem previously identified is supported by the findings of the qualitative and quantitative research. The redesign is supported by user feedback. The user persona is developed as the next step in the research process to identify the target demographic.

User Persona

User Flow

A User flow is the step-by-step stages a user will progress through an application as he uses it. This is created keeping in mind the redesigned application and how it will work.

Low Fidelity Sketching

Based on the Information gathered from User Research, Persona and User flow, the low fidelity sketches for the redesigned application is created. This is done to understand how the redesigned needs to be and how it works.

Prototype Testing and Conclusion

In conclusion, the results of the prototype testing are promising, and the users seem to enjoy the application because it is simple to use and intuitive, with all of the users' pain points addressed and redesigned in the new screens. The users have noted a few things that still require improvement, such as the seat selection's square boxes being a little difficult to click. However, these issues may be resolved in the future with continued user feedback.
